Announcing: The MilSO Directory Map

Happy Monday, friends! I'm excited to announce my brand new MilSO (military significant other) bloggers directory! I know, I know.. You're probably thinking, another milso directory..?! BUT, I promise this one is different! The directory itself is an interactive map meant to help find other bloggers in your general location.

I've loved connecting with and meeting some of the other blogger ladies here in Hawaii. I hope to be able to meet more and help other ladies make connections as well.

Check out the directory and add your blog here!

Ta-Da!

The bloggity blog got a little make over yesterday and I am SO happy with how everything turned out.

I've been wanting to do a redesign for a while now, but I honestly had no idea where to start. This time around I was set on paying someone to do it for me versus using PicMonkey and doing it myself. The problem is, I didn't know how describe what I wanted to a designer, because I didn't know what I wanted. I liked the last design that was created for me, but I honestly didn't love it, and for that reason it only stayed up for a couple of months.

In an attempt to save my sanity (and some money), I went the pre-made route and found some templates for sale on Etsy that I really liked. The thing I liked best about pre-made blog designs is that I could see exactly what I was getting up front.

After searching for a while, I decided on a design from Kelsey. Her instructions made it totally simple to install myself, and she even included a bunch of extra little extras (such as the hex codes and font names used in the design) all at a great price!

Since our guests left yesterday, John and I used the day to recover. Who knew vacation could be so exhausting?! While he napped, I spent some time on the computer creating extra graphics and reworking html. There are still a few things that need to be tweaked, but they'll gradually get done. I hope.

In the mean time, I'd like to focus more on blogging and being more dedicated. I purchased a few ad spots last night, but I'm looking to buy some more. Let me know if you're having a sale or if there are any blogs that I absolutely must advertise on! (:

And if you really love me, let's swap...!

Who to Follow?

After blogging for two years, it seems like many of my favorite bloggers have either stopped blogging or have sort of transitioned to blogging about topics that I'm no longer really interested in. Over time, my reading list has decreased. I don't necessarily have time to read every day, but it feels like when I do have the time, I'm done in a matter of 20 minutes.

Help me out friends. What are some of your favorite blogs to follow? I'm partial to the momma and military wife blogs, but really, I'll read anything.

Love, Alex

Blog Goals (ish)

The end of April marks two years that I've been blogging. Well, blogging like a grown up. I did the LiveJournal and DeadJournal thing in high school, but that doesn't count. If only I had been smart like Taylor Swift.

Since I'm approaching a large milestone, I figured it might be a good idea to attempt to focus on my blog some more. Between moving to Hawaii, getting settled into the new house, and making care packages, I haven't had a ton of time to dedicated to blogging. Part of this has to do with the fact that I had NO idea how much time selling these care packages would take. While Hubs was deployed, putting together care packages was something that I would do to pass the time. And boy, does the time pass as I'm cutting and gluing.

Last night, Hubster and his friends had a boy's night sleep over. I figured that in my alone time, I could accomplish a bunch of blogging tasks to get myself on track for April. Unfortunately, I had some over-tired little ladies who didn't go to bed until much later than I was hoping for. I have tons of ideas for post and general blog tasks that I'd like to accomplish, but hardly any time to do them in.

Before the end of April, these are a few of things I'd like to focus on:
  • Write more consistent and well thought out posts. Using a blogging calendar and scheduling blog posts in advance helps me get this done. If I know what I'm going to write about before I sit down, and I have a few days to get it done, it always comes out 100 times better.
  • Use better photos. Across the internet lately, I've seen many people (especially moms) talking about using their cameras versus their cell phones for photos. Although I usually carry my camera around, whipping out my cell phone from my back pocket is so much easier. Cell phone pictures suck.
  • Read more blogs. I have a hard time finding a block of time to read. I use to read and comment almost on a daily basis, and now it's become like a once a week thing. I've missed lots of fun link ups in the process also. Hopefully, with some better organization, I can devote more time.
  • The above statement goes for social media also. I know it can be a time suck, but I seriously feel like I've missed a ton of exciting announcements through Twitter and Instagram. I feel slightly guilty that I get on, load my tweet or photo, scroll a little, and then put it away.
  • Revamp this page. In addition to possibly getting a new design, I'm thinking I might want to go through my tags and clean those out. My pages could probably use some work too. I can't think of the last time I updated my about me page.

Thanksgiving Meals

Source
Can you believe that Thanksgiving is only two weeks away?! It seems as though this year has blown by! We still haven't decided what we'll doing this year. Between trying to find a place to live and waiting for our household goods to arrive, we're not even sure where we'll be. A restaurant is sounding better and better each day. Although I'll be missing out on some Thanksgiving favorites, I feel like it gives me more time to plan for Christmas, which is my real favorite.

Speaking of Thanksgiving favorites though, I can think of one thing that was never my favorite. Stuffing. Up until my parents started making it with sausage, I never touched the stuff. I also never knew that people referred to it as dressing. My blog sponsors: Angel, Ashley, and Kelsey are all on the same page as me with calling it stuffing.

Continuing with the stuffing theme, there's another stuffing related topic that causes a bit of a stir. Do you actually stuff it into the turkey, or is it a made as a dish on the side. Kelsey does both. Ya know, to be sure she has some leftovers. Ashley and Angel both make it seperately, and Angel's family actually makes it from scratch with dried bread.

Since I don't exactly eat everything in the Thanksgiving spread, I was wondering if anyone else was a picky eater life myself. Nope. Occassionally Ashley's grandma will cook beets, which she won't touch, but other than that, it's fair game. Angel and Kelsey eat it all!

Once dinner is done and it's time for dessert, Kelsey and I are totally on the same page. One pumpkin pie for me, and one for everyone else. Ashley's favorite dessert is a chocolate chess pie that she picks up from the fall fest at church each year. Angel's favorite desserts are two homemade treats that are gone by the end of the meal, double double chocolate (YUM!) and a pumpkin/cream cheese pie that is heavenly.

Now that you know what some of my sponsors do for Thanksgiving, what are you most looking forward to eating or doing this Thanksgiving?

Love, Alex

Blog Organization

I'd have to say that I succeed in getting my home life organized. I even cleaned the toilets! Like I said yesterday, today is the blog's turn. I've been blogging for a year and a half, and have learned so much in that time. One of the things that has helped me with blogging the most, is keeping a calendar. I've been using one for a while, but this trick that I learned from Sew Much Crafting, has made it so much easier.

Before I get into that, I'd like to introduce my two newest sponsors! Lanaya from Raising Reagan & Kelsey from Pardon My French! I know many of you know Lanaya. She is mom to adorable Reagan and business owner! Kelsey is a fellow Army wife, and mom of three gorgeous kiddos up in Alaska.

Now, my blog calendar. A few months ago, I purchased the printable blog planner set from Mama's Got It Together. The first things I started using was the monthly calendar. By the end of the month, it was looking like an ugly scribbled mess. I would either not have time to post, or something would come up and I'd need to switch posts around a bit.

That's when I saw Danielle's post. She gave me the idea to start using Post-It notes to write my blog posts on, so that they could easily be moved around with out causing a mess. I bought a $1 pack of four small Post-Its at Walmart, which I was able to cut in half and stick on one of the page margins.

Now when I get ideas, I jot them down on the sticky note and stick it on the calendar. This month I'm using four colors instead of just two. But only because I like pretty colors. I haven't really assigned a subject to any of the colors, so for now I just go in rainbow order. One day I might start color coding, since that usually helps with staying on top of things.

Do you do anything like this for your blog?

The Weekend is Over

I love four day weekends. Especially now since Hubster is in school, and they only happen on a rare occasion. One of the things that I loved about Fort Stewart, was that if he wasn't doing some sort of training, Hubs could guarantee at least one four day weekend a month. You know how August doesn't have any holidays? In Georgia it did. Haha!

Even though I love the long weekends, they always throw me off, more than the regular weekend does. Other than laundry, I don't do much cleaning, so that we're able to enjoy family time. I attempt to stay away from the blog and internet, even though I normally fail at that. Once the week starts back up again, I'm left with a jumbled mess to tackle.

I intended on starting September brand new! Try to be more organized when it came to life in general, as well as the blog. The weekend got in the way and with it already being the 3rd of the month,  it feels weird late. Either way, I'm going to give it my best shot. I have plenty of oranization sheets printed. I'll be starting with home life today, and will focus on the blog this evening or tomorrow.

Blog calendar that needs some work
I caved and subscribed to Passionfruit over the weekend,  so one of my main blogging goals will be to increase sponsorship and ensure that my sponsors are satisfied.

I hope that everyone had a great weekend! Any goals that you'd like to accomplish this week?

Do Your Friends Know?

A while back when I was chatting with Sara about blog stuff, the topic of friends popped into the discussion. Mainly, our friends knowing about our blogs. To my surprise, I wasn't the only person who kept blog life and real life separate. I had separate personal and blog Pinterests, Instagram, and email accounts. God help me if I ever mentioned the word blog or liked a blog Facebook page on my personal account. For the longest time, I wouldn't even tell Hubster the name of my blog, because I didn't want him reading it either.

I have no idea why I was so scared to let people know that I blogged. You know when you record yourself talking and then you play it back and it sounds like the most annoying thing you've ever heard in your life? I pictured it to be something like that I guess. Why would anyone want to know about my day to day life anyway? I was cool sharing my thoughts and such in the blog world, because chances were I would never run into a blog friend in real life. Heaven forbid anyone ever move to St. Robert, Missouri.

Slowly, my real life friends started finding me. I'd be lying if I told you that I wasn't mortified when a real life friend found my Twitter, followed by my blog. People were liking my Facebook page, and on more than one occasion, Google outed me. I have no idea how people kept finding me.

Because I had maintained separate social media accounts, my personal ones were lacking when it came to updates about life and the girls. I slowly started opening up to the idea of being open about the blog. I deleted the personal IG and added everyone on my Munchkins&Military one. I did the same with my Pinterest. Occasionally I'll post blog stuff on those outlets. I haven't made the jump on Facebook yet though, because EVERYONE I know is on that. I'm sure that once we get moving to Hawaii, it'll be the easiest way to keep everyone in the loop about our lives. Plus, who doesn't want more readers?

Do your friends know about your blog?

The Ad Bomb & A Free Printable

Was anyone else as distraught as I was when they found out the Passionfruit was going to start charging? In case you're unfamiliar with Passionfruit, it's an ad management site that makes it easy to buy and sell ads for your blog or business. Until recently, it was free to use. The only time you had to pay was if you wanted to purchase ad space, and of course there was the free swap with a promo code option. Not anymore.

Starting September 1, Passionfruit is going to start charging a $9 monthly fee, or you can shell over $50 before then to get access for a year. For some reason I panicked when I saw this. It's not like I have to use Passionfruit. I am fully capable of simply editing a little HTML to add or remove buttons on my own. Plus, I rarely actually sell ads, so I'm mostly missing out on the convenience factor. I could leave swaps up forever and it really wouldn't be a huge deal.

In all honesty, I haven't decided whether or not I want to take the plunge yet. I don't run a huge blog where I constantly have people purchasing ads. I'm super thankful for the ones that have though! I'm curious to know what some of your guys are doing? Have you had luck with selling ads so far, or if you only use it for swaps, will you start paying for the service.

Until I actually figure it out, I've decided to create this sheet to help me really stay up to date with what my sponsors have going on and to try to keep them happy and hopefully coming back. Writing everything down is seriously the only way I can remember. Go ahead and steal if you'd like.

Oh! And in an attempt to find some new sponsors and see if I will be able to maintain a paid account, my ads are ALL 55% off at the moment with the code: PASSION

Making Your Own About Me Image

Notice my cute new "about me" image on the left? I made it myself with PicMonkey. I've been using PicMonkey for a while now, but I was recently lucky enough to be upgraded to a Royale membership in return for spreading the word about their awesome features and providing tutorials like this one. I loved using the free version of PicMonkey, but let me tell you, Royale is even better! There are so many more overlays, fonts, and edits available when you upgrade.

When I got my new blog design, an about me section was not included as part of my package, it was going to be costly to have one made and I knew I could do it relatively quickly and easily myself. When I had my blog consult with Sara a few weeks ago, she pointed out that I should definitely get the image made ASAP.

I started out by creating a blank collage. I used three ducks in a row.

From there I rotated the image to make it vertical and change the size to 195x585 so that it would fit in my side bar. The height wasn't super important since I knew I'd have enough room and I could crop out any extra later. I set the spacing to 0 and rounding to 50% so that my image would have rounded corners like the images that are part of the blog design. If you want your image to be a circle, you can set the rounding to 100%.

Next, I inserted my image from the computer. Once you have your image, you can just drag and drop it into the top square. Once your pretty face is in, go ahead and save your image, then open it up in Edit mode.

After opening in Edit mode, click the P on the side and choose the main font that you want and click to add text. Quicksand was most like the default font on my blog. Type or paste what you want your "about me" section to say. Make the width of the text block the same width as your image. Adjust your font size and then move the top of the text block to where you want it.

If you want to be extra spunky, choose a few keywords from your mini bio and add some flair to them. Highlight the word that you want to jazz up, pick a new font and/or color. I used the colors from my background. You can type in your own hex codes for colors and then press enter.

Once I was spunkified and had my rainbow of pretty words, I had to crop my image to remove the extra from the bottom. When you're happy with what you have, click save. You'll have to upload to a website like Photobucket, and then insert the HTML for the image to your page.

When Migraines Attack

Scheduling posts has been going fabulously for me for the past week or so. I take a little time out of my evening to get something together for the next morning, schedule a time and go to bed happy. I've even got some stuff ready to go for later on this week. Last night I wasn't able to get a post done for today because at the evening settled in, so did a migraine. I've only been dealing with this for the past two-ish years, so I am sympathetic to those of you who have been dealing your whole lives.

When I get migraines, the rest of the world around me has to stop. I started developing these headaches while I was pregnant with Adri. My doctor thought it was odd since normally migraines go away during pregnancy. Since then, it's gotten progressively worse to the point where sometimes it causes me to throw up. Even though it wasn't horrible last night, I definitely didn't feel like sitting in front of a computer.

Thankfully I'm feeling better this afternoon. I'll be taking my migraine medication when I'm supposed to in order to avoid being paralyzed again.

On another note, you mommies who are about ready to lose your minds due to the evil minions you've created need to Raising Reagan. I'm seriously hoping that I'm able to start letting go of the little things.

Why I Need To Schedule Posts

Just my luck. Our internet modem/router fried itself yesterday and the cable company won't even be available to return our call until tomorrow morning. So that's why I'm blogging from the Fort Leonard Wood library. I was hoping to share my beautiful Scavenger Hunt Sunday photos with you, but the internet is honestly too slow to get these puppies up on PicMonkey and then upload them. I might try with a few of them though. Or not. All of my other pages are taking ages to load. And that is why I need to start scheduling my posts.

Not only would scheduling posts help me avoid not posting due to unforeseen circumstances like the internet not working, but actual real-life issues as well. Like a kid with a tantrum or a sick baby. Things like emergency errands like taking Hubs his lunch wouldn't interfere with my ability to get something posted in time to actually be read that day.

Also, have you noticed that having a scheduled post helps relieve some stress and seems like it gives you extra time in the day? In the past when I've scheduled stuff ahead of time, I've noticed that I don't have to scramble in the morning to get something typed up. It allows me to spend the mornings hanging out with the girls instead of sitting them in front of Netflix while I'm in the kitchen typing. Now that I'm trying to take the girls out more in the morning, this would be a huge time saver! We can get out before the sun becomes insanely hot, and maybe spend nap time blogging.

As much as I love blogging, lately I've realized that it has started to take over family time a tad. I think if I could find a good chunk of time (like nap time) to knock out a few posts for the week, I'd be set. My only hesitation is that I really enjoy posting about our day to day life. But who knows, maybe scheduling will help me in my quest to become more organized.

Do you schedule your posts? How far in advance do you do it, and when do you find the time to get it done?
