Don't Judge Me

On Monday I went to the dentist for the first time in four years. Yes, FOUR years. In the time between my dentist appointments I was pregnant twice and probably didn't take the most spectacular care of my teeth. Pair that with an excess of sweets and gallons of wine and I was certain that dentist was going to tell me that my teeth were getting ready to fall out of my face.

When my adult teeth came in, they had really weak enamel on them. For this reason, my teeth have always been kind of sensitive and I've had to take extra good care of them. After becoming a mom, I started putting the little ones first. Some days I would be so tired that I would go to bed without brushing my teeth. Don't judge!

Part of the reason that my teeth never saw a dentist in Georgia is because I would have had to drive half an hour to drop the girls off at day care, then half an hour back to where the dentist was, and then have to make the entire journey again once my appointment was over. For some reason, driving two hours didn't seem worth it to me. Granted, we've been paying for dental insurance all this time.

After looking at my teeth closely in a makeup mirror the other day, I noticed a black mark on the front of one of my front teeth. Because of that, I immediately called to get setup with one of the only dentists in town. I went into my appointment convinced that I was going to have my tooth pulled since it was all damaged. It didn't help that when they opened up my x-ray, the first thing the dentist commented on was how long my roots were. I thought, "Oh shit. That's going to hurt so bad."

After glancing at my x-rays, I didn't notice any holes or anything unusual. The dentist checked out my mouth with her little mirror and then let me know that there were no cavities. WHAT?! I can't even describe how relieved I was. The only crappy part is that I have to go back next week for two two-hour appointments for deep cleanings. Four hours of cleaning and Novocaine. Not exactly the best turnout. But hey, I'll get to buy ice cream for lunch.

Do you keep up with your semi-annual dental visits?

  1. I love going to the dentist! The reserves pays for me to go annually and if I don't, I get put on the "hit list" for not doing my medical stuff so I have to go. Luckily, I don't mind. :) I know, I'm weird. :p

  2. I haven't been to the dentist since I finished college in 2010. And I take really good care of my teeth but still have cavities.

  3. I haven't been to the dentist in a long time either so definitely no judgement from me. Yay for no cavities though!

  4. I'm so bad about going to the dentist as well. I had a HORRIBLE experience when I was younger, and I kind of just stopped going. I NEED to have my wisdom teeth out, but... I don't wanna! :-P

  5. Before this past year, I hadn't gone since my senior year of high school- when my mother MADE me before I left for college. ;) I don't hate it (consecutive minutes of lying down? Yes please!), but I don't love it either (I can't answer these interview-style questions whilst your hands are all up in ma' grill). I hope they give you the good drugs! ;)

  8. You get NO judgement from me -- because Im in the same boat. We've had insurance ... and I still didn't go to the dentist for almost 3 years. I finally went last month when I had a tooth chip and knew it needed to be taken care of. Unfortunately, unlike you, I do need a lot of work. No matter how good I brush, floss and use mouthwash, I have my father's genetics and not going to the dentist has left me with needing a root canal [which I got this week] and 10 fillings! I'll be so happy come October when I get the last of these appointments out of the way!

  9. Too funny, I just went to the dentist for the first time in almost 5 years last Wednesday! While we were stationed in Germany, it was the biggest hassle for spouses to see the dentist. Taking your children off-post was easy but for some reason, they make spouses jump through hoops to see the on-post dentist. Thanks for posting this, I feel much better knowing I'm not alone:)
